Digitizing Decades of Polymer Science: Inside NJPST's Modern Web Portal

The Mission: Academic Research Preserved in the Cloud

The Nigerian Journal of Polymer Science & Technology (NJPST) is the premier scientific periodical published by the Polymer Institute of Nigeria (PIN). Over several decades, invaluable polymer research, peer reviews, and chemical engineering papers were trapped in physical paper volumes and fragmented storage.

Our mission: Build an open-access, internationally compliant journal portal that satisfies academic indexers (Google Scholar, CrossRef, DOI) with sub-second page loads.

Architectural Challenges

  1. Massive PDF Payloads: Academic journal volumes frequently exceed 25MB with high-resolution electron microscopy figures.
  2. Metadata Rigor: Academic search engines require strict Dublin Core and Highwire Press <meta> tags in the HTML head.
  3. Search & Discovery: Researchers need fuzzy search across abstracts, authors, affiliations, volume numbers, and DOI tags.

Highwire Press & Dublin Core Indexing

To guarantee instant indexing on Google Scholar, every article page renders standardized academic metadata:

html
<meta name="citation_title" content="Thermal Degradation Kinetics of Modified Natural Rubber" />
<meta name="citation_author" content="Dr. A. O. Bello" />
<meta name="citation_publication_date" content="2025/08/14" />
<meta name="citation_journal_title" content="Nigerian Journal of Polymer Science and Technology" />
<meta name="citation_volume" content="18" />
<meta name="citation_issue" content="2" />
<meta name="citation_pdf_url" content="https://njpst.org/api/articles/18-2-04/pdf" />

Fast PDF Streaming & Preview

Rather than forcing users to download 20MB files before viewing, we implemented chunked range-request streaming. Readers can view page 1 instantly while the remainder of the research paper buffers smoothly in the background.
